The president of the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) has called for the concept of the ‘Green City’ to be taken seriously in the UK.

Dr Doeke Faber, opening the 59th AIPH congress in Brighton this week, told an international audience representing over 20 countries that the Green City philosophy is rapidly spreading all over the globe.

He called on politicians to reconsider investing in green spaces for the benefit of our increasingly urban population. Recent research has shown that green spaces create a peace and tranquillity that can reduce youthful aggression and vandalism, even leading to a reduction in petty crime.

“Money spent on green spaces should be seen as an investment rather than a cost,” he said.
