LaserFruit, a Spanish technology company based near Valencia, is launching its patented system which engraves information of fruit skins without deterioration into Europe next year and already has UK supermarkets in its sights.

Executive Jaime Sanfelix confirmed that it was already being used to promote a specially selected range of melons by Carrefour in their Spanish branches. It was also capable of branding apples and pears, citrus, kwifruit, pomegranates and bananas.

Its appeal could also be heightened by the ability to produce design graphics and messages, as well as information already required such as PLU numbers and variety identification.

Sanfelix said that other advantages would mean it could cut the costs of traditional labels, and the problems of storage and maintenance, as well as providing added value.

The cost of a basic machine manufactured by its partner Max Fruit located on the same site is €40,000. It can be incorporated into packhouse flow systems without adaptation.
