UK grow-your-own trend continues

More than a quarter of UK shoppers have said that they plan to grow their own fresh fruit and vegetables over the next six months, according to a new report by analyst IGD.

The research, which is collated in the group's ShopperTrack report, showed that 42 per cent of respondents plan to do more cooking from scratch by the end of 2011, with 29 per cent aiming to make more packed lunches.

IGD said that younger people and those with children were those expressing most interest in growing their own fresh produce and cooking from scratch.

"Shoppers are dealing with a number of pressures on their spending power, such as higher fuel prices and taxes," said Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive of IGD.

"They are being very pragmatic about the situation and are not taking it lying down," she added. "Shoppers are prepared to trade time for cash in order to maintain their quality of food. Some of the popular ways they are doing this include more cooking from scratch and growing their own fruit and vegetables."
