Fair trade organisation Traidcraft has launched a leaflet to help companies achieve more responsible purchasing practices.

The report, entitled Taking the Lead: A guide to more responsible procurement practices, was written by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply and the Responsible Purchasing Initiative.

The report includes case studies of good practices from 12 companies, and unveils six success factors critical for a company to manage responsible purchasing. These are: leadership and accountability; knowledge and the consequences of buying actions; managing conflicting priorities; thinking and acting beyond short-term horizons; managing relationships in the supply chain; and responsible use of power in the supply chain.

Senior buyers from a range of sectors have commented on the usefulness of the report. Adam Swan, commercial director at foodservice firm Brakes, said: “Being in the foodservice industry, it’s difficult to find companies to benchmark our purchasing practices against. The real value of the report and the meeting has been to learn how other companies are changing the way they buy. It is reassuring to discover that the ethical purchasing practices Brakes has started to implement also work for other international companies and are in line with best practice.”
