Tiny C hopes to make big splash with carrots

Growers’ co-op Freshgro has launched a carrot snack pack aimed at the convenience market.

The Chantenay Carrot Snack Pack features sliced carrots and is available in single, round 80g pots as well as a multi-pack design of four 65g snap packs.

Freshgro hopes to capitalise on the lucrative children’s lunchbox market and also has a pack targeted at adults.

The kids version features a colourful design incorporating Tiny C - a Chantenay cartoon character - ensuring it stands out on shelf.

The UK snack market is worth over £2.4 billion but traditional snacks such as crisps and peanuts are declining as consumers move away from high fat and salt diets.

The UK prepared carrot market has seen huge growth in the last few years, with recent figures indicating a 22 per cent year on year increase.

Freshgro MD Martin Evans said: “The Chantenay’s sweetness makes it the perfect choice for an appealing, healthy snack. We have invested a great deal of time and energy into development of the correct technology to deliver a product which enables us to retain the quality of the Chantenay.”

He added: “We are pleased with the end result which is a unique product and one which offers a good profit opportunity for retailers, especially those with a convenience offering.”

The carrots are peeled rather than shaved, and it is hoped a move towards prepared carrots will prevent waste and handling issues in store. Freshgro has around 90 per cent of the Chantenay market, some seven per cent of all carrot sales.
