The Co-operative has pledged to take all the product from Ayrshire tomato grower David Bryson.
Bryson and his family have been growing round tomatoes in the Ayrshire hills for the last 30 years and are embarking on a partnership with The Co-operative in its Scottish tomatoes for the third consecutive year.
The company produces around 140 tonnes of tomatoes per year on 1.5 acres of land between the months of May and October.
The cooler-than-normal growing conditions and the fresh Ayrshire water combine to produce excellent firm tomatoes with a great flavour. The Co-operative has pledged to take all available fruit in 2010.
Carla Mills, category buyer for produce at The Co-operative, said: “The Co-operative is pleased to be able to offer our customers in Scotland local tomatoes yet again. David's tomatoes are top quality and very tasty.”
The variety is Encore which produces a firm and classic round tomato aimed at the salad market.
The tomatoes are branded ‘Scottish’ and priced £1 for a pack of six.
