The market for active radio frequency identification (RFID) systems will surge to $6.78 billion by 2016, up from $0.55 billion in 2006, according to a report from analyst IDTechEx.
The company forecasts that this rapid growth will be due to increasing demand for tracking and monitoring people and objects, as a result of increased competition in consumer goods and consumers demanding more information and better service.
The reduction in the cost and size of the tags and systems will also generate growth, according to IDTechEx. The analyst also sees open standards such as the new ISO 18000 EPC Types 3 and 4, and IEEE 802.15.4 as contributing to the rise, as well as the development of companies using popular forms of wireless communication such as WiFi and ZigBee.
Active RFID Europe, the first exhibition dedicated to active RFID and RTLS in Europe, will be in London, at the Guoman Tower Hotel, from September 19 to 20.
