Tesco has responded to rumours that it is planning to axe 100 head office jobs by saying it is planning changes that will “affect a very small number of jobs in our offices”.

A spokesman told freshinfo: “Tesco is a growing business and we have already announced that we will create 10,000 jobs this year with new stores and the expansion of areas like Tesco Personal Finance. We continually invest in training and developing our people so that as jobs change, people can move to different roles in the business.

"Every year as we finalise our budgets we review the work carried out in our offices to ensure that we are working as simply and efficiently as possible. This year we are focusing on investing in our stores and reducing prices for customers and to help us do this we are making changes that will affect a very small number of jobs in our offices."

He refused to be drawn on the exact number of jobs at the firm’s Hertfordshire HQ that are in the firing line but said it was “in the region” of 100. “We have to consult, so cannot be sure of exact numbers yet,” he added.
