Tesco potato buyer moves on

One of Tesco’s senior produce buyers has walked away from the job after less than a year.

Paul Thomas, senior potato buyer at the UK’s biggest supermarket, has left his position after just eight months.

He will move internally to the retailer’s global transportation operations within its corporate purchasing department. Before taking up the position in January, Thomas had worked in a number of positions including in bakery and corporate purchasing in more than a decade at the company.

No reason was given for his departure but one insider told FPJ: “He is not a produce man - it is such a strange and difficult category to handle”.

Thomas will be replaced by Andrew Blackett, who has been with the retailer for around 20 years in various positions including buying manager for counter as well as several years in store. He takes up the position on 6 September.

The news comes as the company reports wider structural job changes. According to the Daily Mail, Tesco has begun a 90-day consultation period with employees who hold the title of duty manager.

The position of duty manager will be replaced by the post of deputy manager, which the retailer said was a more responsible position and would be offered to about half of the 2,000 workers involved in the process.

Tesco said the move would create a better management structure within stores.
