Tesco launches posh potato

A potato variety said to be the world’s most expensive and exclusive has been launched into Tesco stores.

La Bonnotte, which can fetch up to £400/kg due to the small volumes grown, will be sold for a more modest £1.99 for 750g.

Traditionally grown on the French island of Noirmoutier, Tesco’s stock has been grown on Jersey and is supplied by The Jersey Royal Company.

“La Bonnotte are the caviar of the potato world and kilo for kilo are among the planet’s most expensive foods along with white truffles, saffron, macadamia nuts and Beluga caviar,” said the supermarket’s senior potato buyer, Andy Blackett.
