Tesco fresh directors depart

Two of Tesco’s most senior produce figures have left the UK’s largest supermarket in a move which could have serious implications for the future of the retailer’s future development, The Grocer reports.

Category directors Tim Lee and Alex Dower have both left the company. The Grocer found, after influential spells which saw Tesco continue its meteoric rise in UK grocery.

Dower, who is likely to relinquish his position on Hilary Benn’s Fruit and Vegetable Task Force, is to join quick service restaurant Pret A Manger in the spring.

Lee is to cross the pond to work for Tesco’s sister retailer in the US, Fresh & Easy, which has been struggling to penetrate the market in the states, where it is said Tesco had underestimated the emphasis put on frozen foods.

A spokesperson for Tesco told freshinfo: “We will announce their replacements in due course but we have a strong produce team in place who will take us forward.”
