Tesco has announced a group sales rise of 13.9 per cent for the third quarter.

The retailer said it had recorded like-for-like sales growth, excluding petrol, of 5.5 per cent. UK sales were up 11.6 per cent, with like-for-like growth at 7.9 per cent for the 14 weeks to November 19.

International sales showed the strongest rise, at 23.3 per cent and the retailer said it was on-track to open 150 stores overseas in the second half of the year.

Its overseas operations now account for around 20 per cent of its turnover.
