Swansea volunteers unite with Gower grower to deliver fresh produce to local residents’ front doors.

Roots 'n' Fruits, a food cooperative was formed for the people of Bonymaen, who had complained about the prices of fresh fruit and veg in their local stores.

The group buys vegetables in bulk, direct from a farm, bags and sells it for £2 a bag, along with a recipe and healthy eating advice.

The initiative was initiated by Healthy Directions, a Big Lottery Fund funded scheme operated by Swansea city council.

It suppliers around 60 Bonymaen households and hopes to expand significantly.

Karen Hicks of Healthy Directions told BBC On-line: "Among the issues which concerned people was the accessibility of cheap fresh produce, as for many people here getting to the supermarket or bringing back heavy bags of fruit and veg can be a struggle.

"We've set up a system where a group of volunteers work with a local farmer and supplier who delivers fruit and veg to the area. He digs it on a Thursday and delivers it Friday morning."

Hicks said that cutting out supermarkets and independent retail stores was providing better value for money.
