Supersize sprouts in stores this Christmas

This Christmas, supersized sprouts - six times larger than the traditional offering - are hitting the UK’s shelves after years of development.

The festive season has already seen huge news in the sprout industry with the arrival of the red sprout and a renewed fondness for sprouts on the stalk.

But this new offering from grower TH Clements could be a giant hit with sprout lovers by saving time on preparation in the kitchen and making a big impact on the dining table.

Clements managing director Chris Gedney said: "Customer feedback showed that one of the main drawbacks when it comes to sprouts is in the preparation.

"We have investigated a number of different options included fully prepared product, which meant a lot of handling. The simple solution to the problem - make them bigger!"

To enable the unique size, the sprouts are planted earlier and remain on the stalk for longer to enable the natural growth and flavour to develop.

Gedney said the sprouts have been grown in secret.

“We have been developing the carving sprout for a number of years with trials carried out in designated secret plots throughout Lincolnshire. This is the first year we have produced a commercial crop enabling a full supply for retailers.”

The sprouts, which resemble miniature cabbages, are available in selected retailers priced at £0.99 for a pack of four.
