UK supermarkets have reported no problems with fresh produce deliveries, although more snow is forecast.

Leading British grocery retailers have told Fruitnet.com that they have not experienced any problems with distributing fresh produce across the country despite heavy snow snarling up major road arteries and widespread flight cancellations.

The UK’s leading supermarket operator, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Walmart-owned Asda said they had not received reports of any major difficulties in supplying their store networks, but stressed they would be continually monitoring the development of the weather-related problems.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “Things are still getting through and there have been no shortages to speak of at this stage, but we are checking the situation with our teams.

“We are working very hard given the time of year, making sure that everything is getting through and to do that we are working very closely with our staff and suppliers.

“So far everything is getting through okay, but the situation is being updated all the time.”

"Our shops are in good shape and well stocked up," an Asda spokesperson told Fruitnet.com.

"The Asda team is pulling out all the stops at the moment."However, looking ahead to potential disruption in supplies as the run-up to Christmas intensifies, the spokesperson said that Asda would be taking things "day-by-day over the next week".

A spokesperson for Sainsbury's noted that, while the conditions remained challenging, the retailer continued to perform well.

"Deliveries are getting through and our stores remain open and well stocked, thanks to the hard work of our colleagues in stores and depots.”

"We have drafted in external contractors equipped with snowploughs to clear car parks and ensure they are safe for customers. Also, more colleagues than usual are working in stores to give extra help to customers who need assistance with their shopping.

"All our stores have extra supplies of salt to keep footpaths and driveways clear, and Winter Weather Packs have been delivered to about 400 stores, complete with wheelbarrows, shovels, gritter etc," he added. "People who don't want to travel too far and want to walk to the shops are going to our neighbourhood convenience stores (Sainsbury's Locals) which are receiving additional supplies of fresh food, fruit and vegetables and groceries."

Morrisons' logistics director Neal Austin told Fruitnet that supermarkets were open and deliveries were still getting through.

"We are scheduled to make over 17,000 deliveries this week to 437 stores right across the UK and we undoubtedly face some challenges during one of the busiest weeks of the year," he said.
