Food Technology students at the University of Lincoln have been showing off their hard work at an annual product launch at the Holbeach Technology Park.

The students in the second year of their BTEC National Certificate in food science course presented their work to family and friends after it was judged by a panel of industry experts covering new product development, production and quality assurance.

Bob Jones from Improve, the sector skills council for the food and drink industry, acted as overall judge.

The students were assessed on communication and presentation as well as their knowledge in the individual subject specialties.

Food science leader and senior lecturer, Sharon Dunn, said apprenticeships have become one of the most exciting development areas in the food industry.

Geest, a keen supporter of the advanced apprenticeship scheme, donated the trophy for innovation, which was awarded to Paula Webb from the Geo Adams Frampton site.

Dunn said the product launch is the culmination of two years of hard work. “Staff and students value the opportunity to view the assessed assignment work and to see the finished products and how they are marketed. The element of competition adds an element of fun,” she added.

“Every year the Advanced Apprenticeship scheme produces high-quality students who are able to progress within their company or onto Higher Education courses. I am proud of all our students and must thank the companies which support the programme including Geo Adams, The Pizzeria and Welland Fresh Produce (Geest plc), Del Monte and Kerry Foods.”
