Stubbins Marketing Ltd has won a bronze medal in the True Taste / Gwir Flas Wales Food & Drink Awards 2003-4 for its Santa baby plum tomatoes.

The tomatoes, grown at the Rhymney Valley site acquired by Stubbins almost a year ago, won the award because of their consistent quality and the fact that they feature in the So Good range in Somerfield's Welsh stores, branded with the Welsh dragon.

Category buyer for salads at Somerfield Dominic Edwards told the Journal: “We started this partnership a year ago and we are delighted that it has come to fruition in such a short space of time. Somerfield is committed to regional sourcing and this summer has proved a fantastic success in that respect.

“In Wales it is perhaps even more important, as consumers are extremely patriotic and the opportunity to buy Welsh-grown tomatoes means a lot.”

Stubbins commercial director Peter Turone said: “We are proud to have achieved so much at Rhymney Valley in a year and it is testament to the site's manager Keith Hammonds, the staff at the site and to the relationship between Somerfield and Stubbins. We are investing in trials of newer and better varieties for the next year and we will be back at the Welsh food and drink awards next year hoping to improve on the bronze award we achieved this time around.”

The accolade was announced at a high profile ceremony in Newport's exclusive Celtic Manor Resort Hotel last weekend.

A Welsh Development Agency initiative, the awards are designed to celebrate the food and drink industry's most inspiring techniques and tastes. Winners will be able to display the True Taste Awards branding on their products and literature ñ providing an instant standard of recognition and quality for the consumer.
