Square watermelons from Malaysia turned a few heads in the exhibition halls of Messe Berlin this year.

The result of selective breeding, the Malaysian seedless watermelons are easier to pack and more efficient users of capacity.

Other Malaysian lines on show at the country’s national stand included jackfruit and rose apples. Although jackfruit has a reasonable following in the UK, neither of these exotic items has attracted much attention on the continent.

The Malaysian ministry of agriculture, represented by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama), was attempting to changee that on its fourth visit to Berlin. Fama director Arvindran Salyah confirmed that his country is enjoying increasing success in the fruit trade, especially in Europe.
