Southern African producers have been urged to benefit from demand for organics in Europe by expanding their organic ranges.

Fruit, vegetables and flowers have been pinpointed by trade advisors as potential organic winners for growers from the region.

Anselmo Nhara, a regional trade policy advisor from the Southern African Development Community, told local media: “It is important for countries to diversify their range of exports in order to reduce over-reliance on a few product lines. If the price of one commodity goes down, this will have a serious knock-on effect on a country’s economy.”

Countries considering the move include South Africa, Namibia, Tanzania, Swaziland, Angola, Botswana and Lesotho.
