Somerfield has improved on last summer’s sales to report a group increase of 1.1 per cent in like-for-like sales for the first quarter.

Despite the weak July and August sales for retailers across the board, Somerfield stores recorded a like-for-like sales increase of 1.3 per cent, while Kwiksave also claimed 1 per cent.

The company said the success was down to the company’s new fascia and its store refit programme.

However, while like-for-like sales were positive, overall sales for July and August registered a drop of 0.8 per cent, with a substantial fall in seasonal products.
