Sales at Somerfield have succumbed to the drop in consumer spending and intense high street competition over the past six months.

Like-for-like sales at Somerfield and its Kwik Save stores fell by 1.5 per cent in the 25 weeks to 30 April, in contrast to a 0.6 per cent rise in the previous 28 weeks.

Somerfield, however, stressed the progress it has made in transforming its stores.

A trading statement said that sales have been affected by disruption at a number of stores in the conversion or expansion process.

"Although trading remains challenging, I am pleased with the group's progress as we continue to implement our strategic plan," said chief executive Steve Back.
