Shoppers fall but sales up at Asda

Asda, the UK’s second largest grocer behind Tesco, has announced like-for-like sales increased 1.3 per cent between 1 July and 30 September.

The supermarket said the number of visitors to the supermarket fell by 1.3 per cent but the average basket price increased to 2.6 per cent as shoppers “consolidated” trips.

The basket price does not reflect reductions as part of the Asda Price Guarantee introduced in October.

Doug McMillon, president and chief executive of Asda owners Walmart International, said: "The UK grocery market is entering into what is traditionally a heavy promotional period in time for Christmas.

“Asda, however, continues with a very simple promise to customers - our prices are 10 per cent cheaper than the competition on comparable baskets, or we'll give you the difference."

The supermarket said it was also on track to complete its conversion programme for 147 recently acquired Netto stores, bringing its store total to 528.

It also announced it plans to deliver customer savings adding up to £800 million by 2020, through sustainability initiatives.

The retailer has saved over £70m in 2010 through reducing waste and energy usage in its operations.
