Market traders Ian Bingham, Anthony Andrews, Mark Holmes, Anton Smith and Alyson Longden during their preview of Sheffield’s new Moor Market.

Sheffield City Council has urged fresh produce firms to sign up for the city's new £18 million retail market.

The Moor market, which will open in mid-November, is currently at 90 per cent occupancy but vacancies remain for fresh food stalls.

The development plans will see the old site of Castle Market demolished later this year. However, councillors claim that over two thirds of the old market's traders will make the move to the new site.

Councillor Julie Dore, leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “For 79,000 sq ft of commercial space to be 90 per cent full months before the keys are handed over is a real success story for Sheffield.

'The market is where you find the highest concentration of small businesses in the city.'

The new eco-friendly market, which will occupy a full block on the corner of the city's The Moor and Earl Street, will have fruit and vegetables at its core.

Andy Ward, head of markets at Sheffield City Council, told FPJ last year:'We did substantial research and the results showed people want more locally sourced fresh produce, so we've strategically placed our fruit and veg stalls close to all three entrances at the new market.'
