As reported in last week's Journal, the Jubilee strawberry, exclusive to Marks & Spencer, won all the major strawberry classes at the Kent Soft Fruit Show.

Andrew Sharp, technical manager at M&S said this week: 'We are delighted and very proud that our Jubilee Strawberry has swept the board and that our growers have been recognised for this great product and their hard work.

'Many comments have been made over the last few years about strawberries lacking in the 'traditional' taste we associate with the fruit. This new variety has the ultimate taste delivery. The awards show that our customers can enjoy strawberries just the way they should taste' The search for Jubilee began in 1999, when from July to September, Dr Louise Sutherland, M&S's fruit specialist, and grower William Pierce tasted thousands of strawberries, whittling an original 13,000 varieties down to just 39. One sole fruit with an intense strawberry flavour stood out from all the rest.

Three years after the first search, Jubilee was unveiled. The variety is bigger and juicier than average strawberries, measuring 40-50mm in diameter, compared to 25-35mm for a standard variety, said M&S.
