Bob Wells

SH Pratt founder Bob Wells has died aged 93.

Wells, who was well-known and well-liked within the fruit industry, moved into banana ripening in 1960, having started as a general fruit merchant in 1947.

He rapidly established SH Pratt as one of the major independent banana ripeners in the UK.

The business was originally based in King's Langley, Hertfordshire, before moving to Hemel Hempstead in the same county after outgrowing this base.

A spokesperson for SH Pratt, said: 'Bob had a lifelong passion for banana importing and ripening. He leaves his legacy in the capable hands of his son Robert, who took over the reins in the 1980s.

'Robert was able to build on the strong foundations Bob put in, taking Pratt’s Bananas, now based at Luton, to the current position as the UK’s leading independent ripener.'
