The Port of Dover in Kent closed, following winds of up to 80 mph in the English Channel.

A spokesman told the BBC that sailings from the port in Kent had been suspended while the south coast was pummelled by severe storms moving in from the Atlantic. Operation Stack may have to be re-instated by Kent Police if the port's closure and ongoing strike action by SeaFrance workers creates a further backlog of traffic on the M20.

P&O Ferries cancelled a Sunday sailing from Portsmouth to Bilbao, and another from Bilbao to Portsmouth on March 11. Other Channel crossings to France and journeys between Wales and Ireland have been cancelled.

Eurotunnel services between Folkestone and Calais are running as normal.

At UK airports, British Airways cancelled several short-haul and domestic flights from Heathrow Airport on Sunday night, and British Airways has cancelled 11 flights at Gatwick Airport, while budget airline Flybe has also cancelled some services.

In the north east of England, and in parts of Scotland, snow ploughs are already out on the roads as the risk of snow increases.

The environment agency has warned of the risk of high waves and flooding in southern England. The agency is urging people to stay away from exposed coastal areas and to check for flood warnings.
