Eating seven portions of fruit and vegetables a day could reduce your risk of dying early, a new study has revealed.
Researchers have found people who eat 569g of fresh produce a day - the equivalent of 7.1 portions - slash their risk of premature death by 10 per cent, and live on average one year and 44 days longer.
The research,conducted by the Andalusian School of Public Health's Granada CancerRegistry, alsosuggested that fruit and vegetable-rich diets reduce the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by 15 per cent.
But, while eating vegetables alone potentially reduces the risk of premature death by 16 per cent, eating just fruit does not.
The Spanish researchersanalysed 25,682 deaths among 451,151 people over a 13-year period to come up with the results.
The study is published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
