C J Lang and Son Ltd, Scotland’s largest independent food and drink retailer and wholesaler, has completed the £6.3 million extension of its Distribution Centre in Dundee.

The project, which began in May 2007, has created an additional 30,000sqft of warehouse area, increasing its distribution operations, improving deliveries and increasing site access.

Local firms were used in the expansion, with the main contractor being Dundee-based Muirfield Contracts Ltd. During all the building work and alterations, the service to retail stores was maintained without interruption.

Managing director Scott Malcolm said: “C J Lang and Son’s decision to heavily invest in the warehouse extension was based on a need to increase efficiency and enhance our service to both our retailers and customers, in the most cost-effective manner."

Brian Findlay, the project director who oversaw the construction over the last two years, spoke to the guests about the construction process at the official unveiling of a plaque by chairman Joan Scott-Adiem, granddaughter of founder Charles J Lang.

The purpose-built depot has improved warehouse management systems and operating procedures, in addition to which the extra warehouse space provides capacity for additional fresh food lines alongside increased fresh produce.
