Stephen Young, 18, a commis chef at a local Chef & Brewer pub beat off competition from across the UK to take the £500 first prize in a Chef & Brewer competition. The contest was designed to give the chain's commis chefs a chance to demonstrate their individual flair by developing a starter or main course using fresh Bramley Apples. The prize was resented by Adrian Barlow of English Apples & Pears.

The event was organised as part of Bramley Apple Pie week.

Young's winning recipe, named Monarch of the Glen, was a dish of venison collops and apple tarte Tatin.
