Following its success in improving the diets of school children, Scottish ministers are discussing plans to widen the entitlement to free school meals.

The Scottish Executive intends to target children most in need rather than increasing provisions across the board.

Offering free meals during holidays as well as term time is one move being considered.

A spokeswoman for the Executive said: "If children are getting nutritionally balanced school meals free of charge we know that they are at least getting one good meal a day. If that could continue over the holiday then that would have benefits."

Hopes are high for success in rolling out the scheme following pleasing results from an extension pioneered by East Renfrewshire Council this year.

Meanwhile, the overall bid to improve the quality of school meals has shown considerable progress, according to Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education.

And providing free fruit in early primary years has reportedly had a positive influence on what children eat.

However, inspectors said more work was needed to ensure a consistency in the availability of good quality food in schools.
