A survey undertaken in East Renfrewshire, Scotland, has revealed that shoppers can dramatically reduce their bills by buying loose fresh produce.

During the study, which saw trading standards officials purchase identical quantities of packaged and unpackaged goods from local stores, loose fruit and vegetables were significantly cheaper - in some cases by as much as 23 per cent.

East Renfrewshire’s environment convener, councillor Eddie Phillips, said: "This project shows that consumers could use their buying power to change the way that companies waste resources through excess packaging.

"They can also save themselves a bit of money in the process."
