SCI’s Horticultural Group will be celebrating the first six months of its launch on July 31, 2008 with an afternoon reception at SCI’s headquarters in Belgrave Square, London.

SCI is a unique international forum where science meets business on independent, impartial ground. Originally established in 1881, SCI is a registered charity with members in more than 70 countries.

Director of the horticulture recruitment agency MorePeople Guy Moreton will be at the event to give a presentation on adding value through people in horticulture and the future, in which he will outline the problems of attracting new talent to horticulture and techniques for retaining and developing staff.

Moreton said: “There are very few horticultural organisations which address the very real needs of those working in the commercial sector - this is a growing area which is becoming ever more important with vast potential for work opportunities but there is a horde of people out there who do not know how to access the opportunities before them - SCI’s Horticulture Group could provide that link.’

The group has acquired a following of academic and corporate partners, and has set up a steering group that meets regularly. It has also organised numerous events including the horticulture roadshows, and is currently in the process of organising its first conference on business perspectives due to take place on November 21, 2008.

Membership of the National Horticulture Forum and close links to the International Society of Horticultural Science, with whom it plans to put together a three-day symposium, also means that it has established itself firmly on the horticulture map.
