Sainsbury’s picked up a number of accolades at last week’s Retail Industry Awards, held at London's Grosvenor House hotel.

Chief executive Justin King personally received the Supermarket of the Year award for the second year running, with judges describing the retailer’s turnaround as “simply phenomenal”.

Sainsbury’s was praised for its customer relations and being the “most contemporary retail brand” at “the leading edge of food”.

The supermarket chain also won the Multiple Off-Licence Retailer of the Year,Seafood Retailer of the Year and Multiple Fresh Produce Retailer of the Year awards.

It was also a good night for Morrisons, who won Multiple Training Initiative of the Yearand Fresh Flower Supermarket of the Year. Asda was named Multiple Environmental Retailer of the Year, for its waste reduction and energy-saving initiatives, while Marks & Spencer Simply Food won National Convenience Chain of the Year.
