Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King has said the retailer intends to expand its convenience store portfolio by 30 per cent over the next three years.

The ambitious plans will see a further 100 Sainsbury’s Local stores open in the UK by 2010, taking the total number of shops up to 426.

“The convenience business will play a significant role in making Sainsbury’s great again,” said King, who announced three weeks ago that the company would be axing its Jacksons and Bells banners and re-branding all convenience stores as Sainsbury’s Local.

King continued: “Our current store estate provides substantial development opportunities, and we are seeking and developing a pipeline of new stores.”

Sainsbury’s will shortly name three new regional managing directors for its convenience business.

The retailer is also planning to build 30 new supermarkets and refurbish 50 per cent of all its stores, as part of a bid to boost sales by £3.5 billion over the next three years.
