Outgoing chief executive Justin King

Sainsbury's is to revamp its senior management team ahead of the departure of Justin King as chief executive.

King is leaving the supermarket after 10 years at the helm on 9 July, and will be replaced by Mike Coupe, the retailer's commercial director.

Thus, with the latter stepping up, the company is to promote a number of directors to cover his existing role, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Roger Burnley will move from his existing role as managing director of general merchandise, clothing and logistics to become retail and operations director.

Helen Buck, the retail director, is to become business development director, while Paul Mills-Hicks, King’s former assistant, has been promoted to food commercial director.

King, who is yet to confirm his future beyond Sainsbury’s, told the Telegraph: “Mike Coupe and I are working closely to ensure a strong transition as we move towards my departure on July 9.

“A key part of our success over the past 10 years has been the strength of our leadership team at all levels of our business, and our focus on developing talent from within, ensuring we have a great blend of innovative thinking and experience.

“The changes we’re announcing will strengthen an already strong leadership team, and allow us to achieve even greater success in the future.”
