Sainsbury's claims UK strawberry record

Sainsbury’s is claiming to have broken the record for the first arrivals UK strawberries this season.

The first tray of punnets arrived at its Hull store last week, from the East End Nursery at Keyingham, just 15 miles from the store.

The sunny February contributed to the record-breaking arrival of the crop.

The strawberries received the all-clear by grower Peter Overvoorde, who owns the East End Nursery, and officials from the The Summerfruit Company, who carried out a taste test to confirm the fruit met the Taste the Difference grade.

The strawberries, which were planted at the end of last year, were grown in glasshouses near to the coast, where light conditions create optimum growing conditions.

Phil Finegold, general manager of Sainsbury’s Hull, said: “We’re delighted to be the first supermarket to stock British-grown strawberries this year, and it’s an honour to have them in our store. After a week of gales and rain, it’s great to celebrate the approach of summer with one of the most famous summer tastes.”

Stocks of new-season strawberries will begin to arrive at Sainsbury’s stores throughout the UK in the next few weeks, as the season begins in earnest.
