Rooney gets the red card from Asda

Asda has dropped Wayne Rooney as the face of its promotional campaign this week after his poor performance in the World Cup.

The Wal-Mart-owned supermarket chain terminated its £3million contract with the England striker after just three months. But his fiancé Coleen McLoghlin is still set to front the George at Asda clothing range.

The deal was initially for Wayne and Coleen to appear together.

“But Asda’s American owner Wal-Mart took a dim view of how much it was costing, England’s poor performance in the World Cup, and Wayne’s minimal contribution to the team,” said a friend of the player. “When he was sent off for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho in the quarter final against Portugal it was the final straw.”

McLoughlin will get £1.3 million to promote the new George ‘Must Have’ clothing range over the next 12 months.
