Dutch seed breeder Rijk Zwaan has opened a new production facility in Mexico. Rijk Zwaan Promex is a purpose-built nursery in Guanajuato and will mainly produce tomato and pepper seed and smaller volumes of cucumber seed. “This is the ideal location for us to grow seed,” said project manager Frans van de Sande. “The high light intensity and the temperate climate allow us to produce all year round, allowing us a high degree of flexibility to respond to changing levels of market demand, for example.” Rijk Zwaan Promex has been constructed as a turn-key project in collaboration with the Dutch greenhouse-building company, Van der Hoeven.
UK growers will be able to source the Mexican-grown seed and Rijk Zwaan Promex expects to export more than 3,000 kilos a year. Production manager Kees van D Gruiter said: "We looked for a climate where we could produce year round but which also had a low night-time temperature and a large flat area. We looked all over the world, but settled on this site."
