The Jersey Royal Company is supplying the island’s iconic potatoes to Asda this year with a revolutionary new packaging format aimed at reducing food waste.
Evap film is a gas-permeable packaging film that responds to the natural gases produced during the respiration process and aids the preservation and shelf life of Jersey Royal, throughout varying distribution and store conditions.
Asda technical manager Chris Jones said: “Evap has been a key development within the business for a number of years. We had highlighted the importance of reducing food waste and set about a development process to combine a format that offered practicality for supplier, environmental intelligence for the product along with cost-effectiveness for the consumer.
In order to achieve this, a dedicated program of research, re-engineering and live trials have resulted in today’s end product, which we firmly believe will change the face of fresh produce retailing for good.”
Asada has been working with Evap Environmentals, which has developed Evap for several months. Jones said: “Evap provides results far beyond the shelf life that other conventional films can offer.”
The retailer is rolling out the film nationwide on potatoes, tomatoes and Brussels sprouts later this year.
