Both Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s have appointed new finance directors after months of searching.

Ian Dyson, finance director of the Rank Group, will replace Alison Reed at M&S, while Justin King, Sainsbury’s chief executive, has appointed Darren Shapland, former finance director for Carpetright.

Sainsbury’s has been searching for a new finance director since October, while M&S started the hunt a month later.

Both appointments have yet to finalise a start date although Dyson is expected to take up his post in June with Shapland expected to start later the same month.

Reports suggest Dyson will be coming to M&S for an £840,000 golden hello in shares. His annual salary will be £420,000.

Shapland is thought to be taking on the role at Sainsbury’s for £400,000 a year plus a further £400,000 payment for giving up Carpetright share options.
