Sir Ken Morrison’s contribution to shaping the modern grocery industry has been recognised with the Re:fresh Awards’ most prestigious and personal prize.

The Bradford-born retail veteran was presented with the Florette Lifetime Achievement award at a glittering ceremony in central London last night.

And that was not the only reason to celebrate for Sir Ken, with Morrisons named QV Foods Multiple Retailer of the Year.

The lifetime award recognises Sir Ken’s contribution to the retail industry and to a business - established by his parents - that now boasts 132,000 employees and a net income of £632 million.

It was a night of celebration for Fresh Direct UK, which was named FPC National Foodservice Supplier of the Year before going on to collect the Overall Trader title. Judges praised its outstanding investment in NPD facilities and innovative working practices in what has been a superb year for the business.

“As the Re:fresh Partnership, FPC and FPJ are delighted with the fantastic support of the industry and high calibre of finalists,” said FPC CEO Nigel Jenney and FPJ MD Chris White.

A packed audience at London’s Intercontinental Hotel saw some of the sector’s most innovative companies honoured.

Among the winners on the night were Produce World, which landed the Stubbins Innovation of the Year award for its shelf-life extending field harvester as well as coming out on top as Eurofruit magazine Packer of the Year.

The Jersey Royal Company (Little Big Voice) beat off stiff competition to gain the Prophet Pr3 Marketing Campaign of the Year, while Fourayes Farm was named the Fresh Convenience magazine Processor of the Year.
