Tozer Seeds, the Cobham-based UK independent breeder, hopes to redefine the public perception of a marrow.

A range of small varieties that includes orange, round hybrids called summer squash will be on display at its open day on October 13. There are also regular-shaped golden marrows and green types with pronounced white stripes.

Technologist Jim Juby hopes that smaller product will be more acceptable and provide interest to caterers.

As Halloween draws nearer the main focus of Tozer's event is to feature both pumpkins and squash. It is trialling more than 150 varieties, of which the first ever bred butternut squash will be unveiled.

The as yet un-named variety can mature a month earlier and is already being tested by producers, with favourable results.
