The Red Tractor campaign will benefit from a welcome financial boost

The Agricultural and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) is set to use levies to fund the Red Tractor scheme which works to improve agricultural competition.

Following industry discussion, the board decided to seek European state aid approval for the consumer promotion funding.

The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) will work with the AHDB to finalise the details of the decision to ensure that as much value is gained from the contribution by levy payers as possible.

NFU president Peter Kendall said: “I am pleased the AHDB has recognised and understood the views of levy payers. During our own consultation with members they told us they wanted to see their standards of production promoted through the use of the Red Tractor logo.

“They also agreed it was right that a small proportion of their levy money should be invested to communicate and promote traceability and environmental and welfare standards through the Red Tractor logo and what it stands for.

“Although I am disappointed that this wasn’t a unanimous decision across all sectors, I believe the door remains open and that once the benefits of this investment are demonstrated the remaining sectors will come on board.”
