As reported on frershinfo on Tuesday, in the six weeks to 5 January, Tesco's like-for-like sales increased by a satisfactory 3.1 per cent in the period, below analysts expectations.

“Sales of Christmas nuts were a star area: they grew by a massive 70 per cent compared to last year,” buyer Martin de la Fuente told freshinfo. “Produce performed well with great availabilty before, during and after Christmas. Post-Christmas sales were particularly strong.”

Tesco’s trading statement said: “The Tesco team delivered an even better shopping trip for customers than last year and a profitable seasonal period for the business - by providing high standards of service and availability whilst meeting the challenges posed by having two short trading days immediately before Christmas.”
