The Potato Council is giving secondary school students the chance to name a brand new potato variety.

The competition, part of the Potato Council's 'Cook Your Own Potatoes' initiative, will invite schools to enter names for a new fluffy variety which has purple-coloured features. Students can also enter designs for the potato's packaging, with the best design winning £350 worth of kitchen equipment for their respective school.

“This is a rare and thrilling opportunity for students to get creative and name a potato variety that will be available soon,' said Potato Council's education coordinator, Sue Lawton.

To enter, schools should send their suggested name and their reasons for choosing it to Sue.Lawton@potato.ahdb.org.uk by 15 February.

'We hope to receive lots of great entries for both the name and packaging, and would encourage industry to spread the word and promote the competition to local schools in their area,' added Lawton.
