Posh totty Tara Palmer Tomkinson has been voted Britain's plummiest person in a poll to celebrate the launch of British Plum Month. The It girl and star of I'm a Celebrity Get me out of Here received an impressive 15 per cent of the vote.

Next up in second place was perennial favourite, Penelope Keith, famous for the upper crust characters she played in To the Manor Born and The Good Life ñ Keith doesn't sound so plummy when you use her surname, does she? ñ got just over 10 per cent of the vote.

The poll results had more surprises in store with the dandily-dressed Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen receiving more votes than Hollywood star Hugh Grant, while 80's symbol of sophistication, Joan Collins, only managed ninth place.

Bringing up the rear (so to speak) with just 0.3 per cent of the vote, despite her BBC-approved tones, was Radio 4 Today presenter Sarah Montague.

British Plum Month runs from August 18 - September 18 and aims to encourage the public to enjoy traditional British plum varieties Opal, Marjory and Victoria while they are in season with tastings, promotions and recipe leaflets.

Supermarkets will be stocking British plums in support of the campaign and NFU horticulture board chairman Graham Ward ñ who has a broad Herefordshire accent ñ said: "British plums are sweet and juicy. We want to make sure everyone gets a Great British plum in their mouth this summer."

This is not such a bad idea ñ plums are a fantastic source of vitamin C and include the largely unpronouncable “phyto-oestrogens” that are known to prevent heart disease and cancer. Moreover there are only 19 calories in a medium-sized plum, which leaves plenty of scope for a beer or three.
