Potato and vegetable growers will benefit from the first phosphate cargo to arrive in the UK for several month, coming into Sutton Bridge in time for this years spring plantings.

Mark Law, managing director of Law Fertilisers, said “The international fertiliser market has been a classic example of the turmoil in the world with massive international demand leading to shortages and some of the highest prices ever seen in UK agriculture.

“This has lead to massive inflation in farm costs due to expensive stocks in store at a time of a decline in the value of farm products as a consequence of the record harvests in Western Europe.”

Cambridgeshire fertiliser manufacturer Law Fertilisers is bringing the first phosphate cargo for several months into the UK, following the very recent and sudden collapse of global commodity prices.

“This should bring welcome relief to the Eastern region growers with lower fertiliser costs as well as good supplies. The 1500 tonnes German registered ship Lore will discharge from Sutton Bridge on Wednesday and Thursday, 21st and 22nd January. This is just in time for the onset of spring time planting of potatoes and vegetables which are benefiting from the weak pound which is inhibiting imports,” said Law.

The special phosphate fertiliser is manufactured for Law Fertilisers at St Petersburg in Russia and is designed to increase yields by encouraging rapid early root development.
