Patriotic Brits baffled by Granny

Nearly three quarters of the nation think the Australian Granny Smith apple is British, Sainsbury’s has found.

The research reveals a missed opportunity for home-grown apples, as 58 per cent said they would prefer to pick up a British apple but nearly half said they were puzzled by the varieties of UK apples on offer.

British apple ambassador and food critic, Gregg Wallace, said: "Whether you're a professional chef, an enthusiastic amateur or simply a lover of good food, I have always believed strongly that if it grows on these islands of ours we should use it in season.

"Britain produces an abundance of fantastic fruit and veg from across all four corners of the country and I think it's really important to explore and experiment with British produce and support of British farmers. There's such a fantastic array of British apples available to us that we should all be making the most of what's on offer!"
