Organic Recycling is to extend its multi-million pound Energy and Recycling Park in Lincolnshire with the addition of anaerobic digestion equipment and a biomass boiler.

The extension is aimed at meeting European legislation limiting the amount of waste that can be sent to landfill, as well as the UK government’s call for more anaerobic digestion.

The £16m recycling project has been created for growers and farmers to reduce waste and produce energy.

Andrew Riddington of Organic Recycling said: “We are delighted that the county council has granted permission. Naturally produced methane is drawn from the tunnel and converted into electricity through a combined heat and power unit. The excess heat and CO2 will be used in between 15 and 20 acres of glasshouses adjacent to the plant.

“The digestion process is simple and robust and occurs in sealed tunnels that are airtight. The 1,800Kw biomass boiler will also generate heat for use in the glasshouses from a variety of wood and biomass wastes generated from external and internal sources.”
