Online produce has shorter shelf life

Fresh produce bought online may have a shorter shelf life than that bought in store, a new report has claimed.

A Which? survey found that in-store best-before dates were on average one day later than the same products ordered from websites.

Researchers bought 10 grocery items from Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Waitrose stores, and ordered the same items from their websites, plus Ocado, which delivers for Waitrose, to arrive on the same day as their shop visits.

Products bought in stores with longer best-before dates than the equivalent items ordered online included plums, carrots, potatoes and salad.

“Our snapshot research in October found that, on average, the stores’ best-before dates are more than a day later than for the same products bought online,” Which? magazine said.

But none of the food chains surveyed performed worse than the others overall.

Which? carried out the survey in response to complaints that some online food has a sell-by date of only one day.
